Hamburg Cruise Terminal Parking: Where to Park & Decide
Compare Hamburg cruise terminal parking at Steinwerder, Altona and HafenCity: which lots sit on site, which need valet or shuttle, and how booking works.
On this page
Hamburg's cruise traffic is split across several terminals strung along the Elbe, so the parking question has no single answer: your berth decides whether you drive straight to the ship, hand the car to a valet, or park in a city shopping-garage and walk. It suits passengers on a round-trip embarkation who want the car waiting on return, and drivers who would rather sort the car before the sailing day than on it.
Cruisegate Hamburg's own pages set out a clean split. Steinwerder runs a large terminal car park directly at the ship, Altona states plainly that it has no long-term parking, and HafenCity relies on the commercial garage inside the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier development. Read the terminal name on your booking confirmation first, because booking the wrong lot means a cross-city drive on the morning of the cruise.
Which Hamburg terminal your ship uses
Four cruise centers appear in Hamburg's terminal network: Steinwerder, Altona, HafenCity and Baakenhöft. Steinwerder occupies the industrial south bank of the Elbe, while Altona, HafenCity and Baakenhöft line the northern waterfront closer to the central districts. Your cruise line's booking documents name the terminal, and that name, not the city alone, is what you should navigate by.
The terminals are not interchangeable for drivers. Steinwerder's parking is dedicated to ships sailing from or arriving at Steinwerder, and Cruisegate Hamburg states that no shuttle runs between that lot and the Altona or HafenCity terminals. Because of that, drivers heading for Altona or HafenCity should book parking near the terminal they actually depart from rather than defaulting to the biggest lot.
Steinwerder: on-site parking beside the ship
Steinwerder is the easiest terminal for drivers who want the car at the ship. The terminal has more than 1,500 flood-proof long-term and short-term spaces in Parking Lot A, the drop-off zone and overflow areas, and you walk from the car to the terminal rather than waiting for a transfer bus. If your ship is scheduled from Steinwerder, this is the lot to book and the one to plan your arrival around.
Capacity is finite and Cruisegate Hamburg warns that high occupancy can mean being directed to a gravel or peripheral space along the access roads or into holding areas. Follow the signs and the parking staff rather than hunting for a pitch of your choice. Building an extra 15 to 20 minutes into your arrival protects you if you are routed to an overflow area on a busy turnaround day.
Accessibility spaces sit directly in front of the terminal in the drop-off zone and on Parking Lot A, and they are booked online like any other space, then taken on arrival. Electric vehicles can use public charging points in the Steinwerder car park, reached through the drop-off zone, with payment by charging card or by credit card through a QR code at the point.
Steinwerder rates and online booking
Steinwerder prices depend on whether you reserve online or simply drive up. For Parking Lot A, one day costs 40 euro on site and 39 euro online, while eight days drops from 150 euro on site to 139 euro online; the drop-off zone runs higher. All prices include VAT, and Cruisegate Hamburg notes the actual price may differ at the time of booking, so treat these as the published March 2023 tariffs rather than a fixed quote.
Short stays sit on a separate scale for people dropping off or collecting passengers: Parking Lot A is free for the first ten minutes and 4 euro up to an hour, then 2 euro per additional 30 minutes, while the drop-off zone charges 5 euro from 20 minutes to an hour and then 2.50 euro per half hour. If you are only seeing someone off, the free ten minutes is the cheapest window and the one to time your stop around.
Book through Cruisegate Hamburg's parking page, which forwards you to the booking platform, because reservations by email or phone are not processed. Online booking closes 24 hours before the parking period begins, and you pay immediately by EC card, credit card or PayPal rather than at a machine. Because the online rate is lower than the drive-up rate on longer stays, reserving is where the saving is.
Altona: no long-term lot at the terminal
Cruise Center Altona does not offer long-term car parking, so a ship departing from Altona means arranging parking before you arrive. The recommended route is valet or shuttle parking booked in advance through Cruisegate Hamburg's cooperation partner Parken und Meer. Under the valet option you bring the car to the terminal, drop the luggage first, then hand the car and keys to the partner's staff on the parking site, and collect it in front of the terminal on return.
The area in front of the terminal is a public parking area, and vehicles left there for the duration of a cruise are towed at the owner's expense. Only Parken und Meer is presented as a cooperation partner; Cruisegate Hamburg names other providers specifically as not listed, and cars booked through them and left in the area are towed at the owner's cost. If you want to park the car yourself, Cruisegate Hamburg points to the Hamburg Holzhafen parking garage nearby instead.
Parken und Meer covers all cruise terminals in Hamburg, including Altona, Steinwerder and HafenCity with Baakenhöft, which makes it the practical fallback for departures from the terminals without their own lot. Confirm the handover point and time in your booking documents.

HafenCity: the Überseequartier garage
Cruise Center HafenCity sits inside the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, with around 4,400 parking spaces in the HafenCity area and 1,500 of them in the Überseequartier garage itself. The garage has two entrances, Osakaallee and San Francisco Straße, and cruise passengers are advised to use Osakaallee, which stays open at all times and gives direct access to the terminal. For navigation, enter the Osakaallee garage entrance address on Überseeboulevard rather than the shopping center's main address.
The San Francisco Straße entrance is closed from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM and all day on Sundays and public holidays, so a late arrival, early return or Sunday turnaround should be routed to Osakaallee. Kiss & Ride spaces in the garage handle drop-offs and pick-ups. If you are sailing from HafenCity and returning on a Sunday, plan the exit through Osakaallee before you set off.
Baakenhöft and short-term drop-off
Baakenhöft is the fourth terminal in Cruisegate Hamburg's network and is served by Parken und Meer alongside Altona, Steinwerder and HafenCity. Its own web presence is thinner than Steinwerder's, so drivers departing from Baakenhöft should treat the partner booking as the main parking route and confirm the handover arrangement when booking.
At Steinwerder, short-term parking is a distinct product: the drop-off zone is meant for quick passenger and luggage stops, and Parking Lot A serves both cruisers and short-term parkers. The free first ten minutes applies in both, after which charges climb in 20- to 30-minute bands. If you are helping someone onto a ship and driving straight on, use the drop-off zone rather than entering as a long-stay guest.
If you are spending hours ashore in Hamburg while your car waits, you pay the short-term scale rather than a cruise-long rate. A ship's call of six to ten hours usually falls inside one day of Steinwerder parking, but pick the drop-off zone only for a short goodbye and leave the car in Lot A for a full day ashore.
Entry, cancellation and number-plate rules
Steinwerder uses automatic number-plate recognition, so you enter the plate during booking and drive straight to the barrier without pulling a ticket. The same plate is checked on exit, and if the barrier asks for extra payment you press the help button and quote the booking number. A dirty plate can defeat the camera, so clear it before the drive if your booking depends on it.
Each reservation allows one entry and one exit, so a booking is not a ticket for popping in and out. Reservations are valid up to 24 hours after the stated arrival time, after which they expire without refund, and cancellations or rebookings are possible up to 48 hours before the parking period begins, handled in the account area rather than by phone or email. Overstaying means paying the difference at a machine by plate number before leaving.
Oversized vehicles, cars with trailers and campers follow a separate route through the partner Parken und Meer rather than the standard online products. Payments at the terminal machines accept cash, debit card or credit card. Passengers booked through APCOA at Steinwerder deal with APCOA directly for changes to vehicle details or questions about the reservation.

Which option suits your call or embarkation
For a same-day call of six, eight or ten hours, Hamburg parking is not really about keeping a car for a cruise: you park close, spend the day in the city and return before all aboard. Steinwerder's Lot A works for this because the car sits beside the ship. On a port call, the priority is a short walk back, not the cheapest daily rate, and the all-aboard time set by your cruise line is the deadline that matters. Cruisers weighing the same short-walk trade-off at another stop can compare it with the Copenhagen cruise port guide.
For an embarkation day, choose by terminal. Steinwerder rewards booking the terminal lot online in advance and arriving early enough to absorb an overflow assignment. Altona and Baakenhöft traffic should use the Parken und Meer valet or shuttle service, and HafenCity drivers should target the Überseequartier garage via Osakaallee and factor the walk to check-in into their arrival time.
Nobody should treat a parking booking as a guarantee that the ship waits. Independent parking, off-site lots and city garages all carry the same risk if a return transfer runs late, and the operator's shuttle runs from the external lot to the terminal rather than to a departing ship. Allow a buffer before all aboard that covers the transfer, the luggage stop and any queue at the gangway.
Getting into the city from the terminal or garage
Each terminal sits at a different distance from the central sights, and the walking route differs by berth. Steinwerder lies on the south bank, while HafenCity, Altona and Baakenhöft are on the northern waterfront, so a passenger who plans to walk should map the route from the named terminal before deciding. Public transport, taxis and walking are the realistic options, and the terminal name on your booking is what you plan from.
HafenCity pedestrians step out from the Überseequartier garage area into the surrounding district, which suits a few hours on foot before returning to the terminal. Steinwerder drivers, by contrast, should plan the drive back to their berth in the morning rather than after a day in town, because the long-stay lot is beside the ship and the exit barrier reads the plate on the single permitted exit.
Book the Lot That Matches Your Berth
Hamburg parking follows the terminal, not the city. Steinwerder gives you a flood-proof lot beside the ship with cheaper online rates and number-plate entry, Altona has no long-term lot and sends drivers to valet or shuttle parking through Parken und Meer, and HafenCity means the Überseequartier garage with the Osakaallee entrance as the reliable way in. Baakenhöft drivers likewise fall back on the partner service.
Start from your booking confirmation, note the terminal and ship date, then book the matching product online at least a day ahead so the barrier recognizes your plate. If Hamburg is only a port of call, treat the car as a short-stay item and keep the return well inside your all-aboard time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you park at Hamburg's cruise terminals?
Steinwerder has its own terminal car park with more than 1,500 flood-proof long-term and short-term spaces in Parking Lot A, the drop-off zone and overflow areas. HafenCity uses the Überseequartier garage inside the Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier. Altona has no long-term parking, and the operator directs drivers to valet or shuttle parking through Parken und Meer for Altona and Baakenhöft.
Where do you park for a cruise from Steinwerder?
Use Parking Lot A at Cruise Center Steinwerder. Book online in advance so the barrier recognizes your number plate and you pay the lower online rate, and budget extra time if occupancy routes you to a gravel or overflow space. Short stops go in the drop-off zone, which has a free first ten minutes.
Is there long-term parking at Cruise Center Altona?
No. Cruise Center Altona does not offer long-term car parking. Use the valet option, where you bring the car to the terminal and hand it over, or shuttle parking where you leave the car at an external lot and are transferred in, both booked in advance through Parken und Meer.
Which entrance should cruise passengers use at the Überseequartier garage?
Use the Osakaallee entrance. It stays open at all times and gives direct access to the cruise terminal. The San Francisco Straße entrance is closed from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM and on Sundays and public holidays, so late arrivals and Sunday returns need Osakaallee.
How much does cruise parking cost in Hamburg?
At Steinwerder the price depends on the product, the length of stay and whether you book online or arrive without a reservation, with online rates running below drive-up rates. Tariffs are listed on the parking page and the price for your dates is shown during the booking process.
Do you need to book Hamburg cruise terminal parking in advance?
Booking ahead is the practical choice, not least because online booking closes 24 hours before the parking period starts, and email or phone reservations are not processed. A booking covers one entry and one exit, expires if you arrive more than 24 hours after the stated time, and can be cancelled up to 48 hours before it begins.
